Treating Agoraphobia

Having suffered from agoraphobia myself I attempted all types of agoraphobia treatment. My experience of agoraphobia is it is a type of panic and anxiety disorder that is brought on by the dread of not being in control. It is basically the dread of panic and anxiety itself. You constantly fear going outside of your comfort zone in the event you feel like you are losing control and will have a panic episode. As a result many of us with agoraphobia live their lives very near to home and some aren't even able to leave their homes without being gripped by panic.

Agoraphobia is like all other panic and anxiousness disorders in that it just an over stimulation of the fight or flight reaction. The sufferer simply perceives there to be imminent danger in all types of scenarios and this triggers the stress response. Anxiousness is a natural reaction that is meant to alert us to danger so we can take action to move out of harm’s way. But this response is triggered all too quickly in folk with agoraphobia.

There are many different treatments for agoraphobia. I don’t consider medication treatment as that only suppresses the symptoms instead of offering a cure.

Many of us have had success with Cognitive Behavior Treatment. This is usually the therapy of choice amongst mental fitness specialists who cope with folks with agoraphobia. It attempts to help the individual conquer their stress by taking command of the anxious thoughts and feelings before they get out of control and bring on the stress symptoms.

Exposure therapy is another treatment that can be particularly impressive for treating agoraphobia. It aims to alleviate the individual’s tension by gradually exposing them to eventualities which make them fearful. The individual is taught to use relaxation techniques to manage their anxiousness. With enough exposure the individual will often start to feel more calm in scenarios when they experience them with reduced anxiety symptoms. However this is a challenging therapy for folks with severe agoraphobia.

The best way to stop anxiouness is to be in a calm state of mind as a calm mind is less simply triggered into a nervous state. So any sort of relaxation such as meditation or yoga is a good way to treat anxiousness. The breathing exercises in yoga are particularly helpful when you're feeling agitated as one of the symptoms of anxiousness and panic attacks is fast respiring. Breathing methods that slow down the breathing with deep breaths work well to relieve anxiety. They can be used when you are out if you start to feel agitated.

One of the most effective agoraphobia treatments is hypnotherapy. This could help the individual as the specialist will reprogram the fundamental subconscious thought processes that cause the anxiousness. However people with agoraphobia fear losing control and the thought of hypnotherapy can make some individuals feel a bit like they'd lose control.

The author used to suffer from agoraphobia. Thanks to natural anxiety relief methods and anxiety support groups he was able to overcome his condition.
