Tinnitus: When do I Need to see a Doctor?

At some point in their life, people experience a ringing, buzzing, or some other sound in their ears. Usually, this annoying sound lasts a few minutes at the most, but for some people, the sound just does not go away.

The scientific name given to this obnoxious noise is tinnitus. Often, when a person first has tinnitus, they simply try to ignore the sound. However, over time, it often becomes louder and louder until ignoring it simply is not an option any more.

When the tinnitus is this loud, you really, really should visit your doctor. The doctor might explain that there are two different types of tinnitus: Pulsatile and nonpulsatile. The former sounds like a heartbeat.

Nonpulsatile tinnitus, in contrast, is a nerve issue and the noise will be high pitched and the origin of the sound is your own head.

Often, people who are suffering from tinnitus ask themselves whether they should see a doctor. Again, in my opinion, yes you should, especially if your tinnitus comes with loss of coordination, dizziness, severe headaches or other conditions.

Should you vomit severely or feel that you are about to have a stroke, emergency care is imperative. Do not be surprised if your doctor asks you a lot of questions, he most likely will.

You should be prepared to answer if you’ve recently had a head injury or other nerve damage. You should know whether or not you’ve have an injury to your ear, or whether you think your tinnitus is caused by taking a particular medication.

Two things that you should tell your doctor are: How long you have had tinnitus for, and if you have any dental problems, because these might affect tinnitus too.

If you can supply your doctor with detailed answers to these questions it will be very helpful.
