The term self esteem is used by psychologists to determine an individual’s overall appraisal and evaluation of his own worth. It encompasses both emotions and beliefs. The beliefs may include phrases such as ‘am worthy’ or ‘am incompetent’. Emotions may include feelings of shame, pride, despair or triumph.
They regard it as one of the basic needs of humans since each person values himself in a specific way. It thus contributes greatly to the process of your life from when you are born until you die. It is therefore one of the very essential things for your healthy, normal personal development. The trait normally has about three levels.
The 1st level is known as high self-esteem. If you have this level, you feel able and very worthy. You have enough confidence to face life and you also fee right as a person. You believe strongly in some specific values plus principles, you trust your judgment and also consider your dignity as being equal to other people’s. You do not therefore have feelings of inferiority or superiority.
The next is low level which really is the direct opposite of the high level. When you have this level, you do not feel really prepared to face life and you might also feel wrong as a person. You may criticize yourself heavily, you could be sensitive to any criticism and you might be too ready to please others. You might also possess defensive tendencies, be openly irritable and find it difficult to forgive others.
There is also the middle ground level which falls in between high and low. This means the person can feel useless and able or wrong and right simultaneously. Such people show these incongruities in their behavior by acting rashly at times and wisely at other times.
This character trait usually starts developing immediately a child is born. The family, the school and society in general can determine to a great extent how a child will value himself in life. A child’s self-worth may be affected if he is criticized, discouraged or abused. A child who is praised, encouraged and loved may develop a high self-worth.
Although you cannot touch self esteem it plays a great role in determining how you feel. Although it is invisible it is ever present whenever you look at yourself in the mirror. It is inaudible but always present whenever you speak about yourself. You can gradually transform the way you value yourself. You might begin with focusing on some of your great qualities and the greatest things you have done. This will help you to start learning how to love and accept yourself.
