Relaxation To Stop Sleep Panic Attacks

Although panic attacks commonly happen during the day, some people also experience the at night. When someone experiences a sleep panic attack they experience similar symptoms to a regular attack, the main difference between these and regular daytime attacks is that it can be difficult to link up the cause. Occurring in the middle of the night or early in the morning, there may be difficulty in breathing, chest pains, a racing heartbeat or feelings of needing to escape.

Although it can be more difficult to determine the exact cause of an attack that occurs at night, you can often look back at the previous day and find a traumatic or overly stressful situation that may have been the trigger. Often when you sleep you mind will review the days events and replay them which can cause the same emotions to reoccur during sleep. Treating these types of attacks is similar to treating daytime attacks.

Using Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Sleep Panic Attacks

One of the key ways to deal with a panic attack in general is to relax the mind and body. This helps to calm the mind down and avoid the panic attack altogether. To accomplish the same thing for sleep panic attacks you can try some relaxation techniques just prior to going to bed, this will allow the body to be more relaxed while sleeping and be able to handle any stresses that may come up while sleeping (during dreaming, for example when you mind is going over what happened during the day).

One way that you can help your body and mind before going to sleep is with deep breathing exercises. While laying in bed, inhale through your nose, making sure that you are using your diaphragm and fill you lungs. Don’t try to hold your breath but let it out naturally through your mouth. As you exhale let all the negative emotions of the day and the tension in your body exit with your breath. Repeat this several times concentrating on becoming more relaxed with each breath.

You can use a number of other ways to help you relax before sleep. If you have a partner you can try massage. Meditation and prayer can also be used, whatever works for you. Try turning the TV off and relaxing with a book for the last half hour before bed or some relaxing music. Anything that helps remove the stresses of life and lets you relax a little before sleeping will help.

Often, just knowing that you are working on a solution to your anxiety about sleep can be the solution to the problem. Learning techniques to relax your body and mind can help to minimize or even eliminate sleep panic attacks completely.
