Putting The Lights Out On Insomia

How many times have you spent the night staring up at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep despite your best efforts? I’ve had the same experience quite a number of times and it’s never something that I look forward to.

What about seeing the morning light through the window and realizing that you haven’t even fallen asleep yet? It can make you feel defeated before the day even begins, and in the back of your mind you know that every minute you’re awake is only going to make the day tougher.

There has to be a way around this, right? You’ve likely heard lots of advice on falling asleep more easily, but you may have also found that lots of those methods don’t work. Is there any way to convince your brain that it’s time for bed?

If you’re desperate, there are some sleep aid medications that you can take, such as Simply Sleep. I generally wouldn’t advise taking such medication since it puts you at risk for other problem, but they can be effective. If you just have occasional sleeping problems, it’s probably not a good idea to take such medication.

A simpler way of relaxing so that you fall asleep easier is to read a book in bed before you turn out the lights. Reading at night usually brings on that drowsy, heavy eyelids feeling for me.

You may even get better results from reading something boring – a boring book will probably relax you more than an exciting one. Even if the plan doesn’t work and you don’t fall asleep, at least you’ve learned something!

The reading method works by taking your mind off the fact that you can’t sleep and focusing it elsewhere. This concept is important to my last piece of advice.

Whatever you do, try not to think about the fact that you can’t fall asleep. If you’re worrying and feeling anxious about your lack of sleep, you won’t be able to enter the state of relaxation that’s necessary for sleep. So thinking about falling asleep only makes it more difficult. It may seem strange, but that’s how the human brain works.
