One of the most common and debilitating disorders afflicting modern man is stage fright. In fact, of all the anxieties we may fall prey to, stage fright is probably one of the worst, insofar as the generated fear response is the most out of scale to any actual danger.
Say, for instance, that you’re afraid of flying. You can rationally argue that there is a certain probability of hitting bad turbulence, engine problems, or any other problem that could result in a crash. But with performance anxiety or stage fright, there is usually no actual danger at all.
Regardless, the strange thing about anxieties is that no level of rational discussion helps you to diffuse the strong negative emotions and the gut-level response that you feel, as the sufferer of the anxiety. This is because your response is kinaesthetic rather than based on logic. This results in a very unpleasant, yet powerful, physiological shift driven by stress chemicals flooding your bloodstream. These chemicals include epinephrine and cortisol.
The unfortunate sole dealing with anxiety experiences a wide range of awful symptoms and feelings such as shaky hands, a parched mouth, weak knees, a pounding of the heart, and even panic.
But no matter how severe someone’s developed response in a performance or presentation context, the discomfort can be dramatically reduced, or even completely transformed from terror and stress, to feelings of empowerment and elation. Even the most anxious and reluctant presenter, forced to speak at a wedding, deliver a eulogy at a relative’s funeral, or speak to a group of several thousand conference attendees, can make rapid and powerful improvements, both in their skill-sets and in how they feel.
There are a number of effective methodologies in the modern psychotherapeutic arsenal that have an excellent success rate against stage fright, and all sorts of performance anxiety.
In my own private practice in Toronto, many years ago, I made use of the old discipline of hypnosis, alongside newer power therapies including EFT, Be Set Free Fast and New Code NLP. The former two are energy psychology therapeutic methods.
Hypnosis is unquestionably effective in dealing with stage fright because it allows a skilled hypnotist to guide a subject into re-writing the negative past while also installing resourceful states. Using trance, we can transform problematic emotional states, often permanently.
Energy psychology provides an alternate way of deleting bad feelings that hold the client back. It is then a simple matter to install new empowering beliefs, and create resourceful states that transform a problem into a pleasure. One session is often all that is needed.
