Is It Time To Slow Down?

Sun up to Sun down working on the fields to grow crops, raise animals to feed a family or helping to provide milk, butter, eggs. Farming was a hard life, but what about today?

The nice thing about working on the farm was that the family pulled together, worked together, and when there was time they played together. In this day and age the Mom and Dad Divide and conquer.

With all the demands of putting kids in “everything” there is also the demand of paying for these camps, clubs, leagues, and if a higher education is in the mix- watch out you most surely will have to get some school loans in place.

Today we are lucky, we do live close to each other and can help one another out, as well there are many companies out there such as Social Service Coordinators whom hire advocates to research the best deals and find ways to save you money.

Farmers ate what they harvested, we eat what we can pick up from a window on our way to somewhere, and it better be quick or our heart rate increases and we are mad. Meanwhile we chomp down our processed, fat, food and wonder why we are getting fat and don’t feel so great. SLOW DOWN- take the extra few minutes to gather some healthy foods and sit down as a family. If we don’t slow down our bodies will make us at some point with health problems.

If there is a miracle today it would have to be medicine. There is a catch- many are popping the pills to stay skinny because they don’t have the time to visit they gym- and don’t forget about the fast food. Many are also popping pills to stay calm, fight depression, relax nerves, and give them more energy. All this medication comes at a cost to your health and pocket book. We need to slow down- I’m not saying become a farmer because their life is not easy, but we do need to take a step back and “smell the roses”.

Slow down is not mentioned by me alone, medical professional, the news, our children need the pace to quiet down. Does your family need all these extra activities? Can you cut out going to dinner and save a little on the pocket book- where else could your family cut out to slow down?

One of the first things you can do is make time for the family to meet together and discuss how everyone is doing and what changes could be made to the schedule of everyone’s routine that would allow more time for the family to be together and cut out the cost of doing everything. Then take those suggestions and make a plan everyone can agree on.

Calendars, chalk boards, cork boards are all a great avenue for posting upcoming events and making sure everyone know what the week’s schedule is and how things should run- becoming organized might take a little time at first, but in the end it will save allot of time.

Something that most families never put on their priority list is what I like to call “down time”…this is where the family watches a movie together, plays games, or goes for a walk. This is where the body rejuvenates, and your family gets some bonding time. At a football game, albeit you might be together with the family, this is not relaxing. For your body to distress your actions must bring on comfort and having a soothing ability. One family I know took turns giving each other back rubs, abash, how good would this feel?

Take the time today to slow down, “smell the flowers”, look at the clouds, and enjoy life.

Would we go back to the pioneer days- probably not, however every once in a while I bet we all long for the simpler life.
