Firstly it is important to understand why people have driving fear, and then it is easy to look at ways to cope with it. There are many reasons why people could be scared of this, some being more obvious than others. As a result, some of these fears will be easier to handle than others. Some fears are specific to certain types of driving, whereas others involve driving in general.
An example of a fear that is perhaps less obvious could be claustrophobia. Of course there are plenty more, and this is just one example. As claustrophobia is a fear of being trapped in a small space, being stuck in a fairly small space, i. E. A car, could cause many problems for people who are claustrophobic and result in them feeling less easy about driving.
Another fear that is less obvious is motion sickness. Without a doubt, this is more obvious than the previous example, yet is perhaps still not instantly obvious. A car obviously moves; therefore someone who has severe motion sickness causes many problems, making them feel quite sick.
One single traumatic incident could cause this fear; perhaps when the person in question was a young child, which could cause problems later in life. Driving the car could be the fear that develops or even being in a car in general. A fear could develop straight after a crash or after several years. Yet, a crash is not necessarily the cause for a fear; another example could be a series of near misses.
These fears are often rather irrational; therefore there must be a way to get over the fears? When the fear is specific to certain situations, a gradual introduction to the environment of the fear is great cure. For claustrophobia the person involved should enter a familiar small room that is enclosed. Once the person is comfortable with this, the room should be then changed to something smaller, once comfortable keep going until the environment is as small as possible. This does not necessarily have to be done over one single day, but a few weeks or months would probably be better.
If the driver is scared of all driving in general then it is important to assess why, and understand that the fear is most likely irrational, understanding how many people drive every single day without any problems, and any incidents that may occur are mostly quite minor. Obviously freeway (motorway) driving is seen as more dangerous and collisions there generally have more serious repercussions. However, if you personally drive safely, then there should be no problems. Many people drive for years often without any problems.
Motion sickness is difficult to self treat; however doctors can no prescribe medication for this. This should help and perhaps cure the fear of driving in this case.
Therefore for the psychological ailments it is best to gradually introduce the problems to the ‘patient’ in order to cope with the fear and overcome it. This is a simple form of a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, used and recommended by many top psychologists worldwide. Hopefully this will help you to cope with the fear of driving.
