During a fascinating interview with Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx from Answers for the Family Blog on L.A. Talk Radio, Mickey Kay Troxell, founder of Pegasus, described how she first stumbled across Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and how well it helps people live happier, more fulfilling lives.
EAP is a client-oriented therapy that essentially provides hands-on opportunities to experience new solutions. It also helps build healthy coping skills, ameliorates stress, improves an individual’s internal happiness, and provides long-term recovery.
This unique therapy addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs, including behavioral issues, ADD, ADHD, substance abuse, chemical dependency, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and communication and relationship issues.
Continuing Education (CE) programs for mental health professionals designed by Pegasus provide the highest education standards available anywhere. Pegasus also offers an Outreach Program, which provides disadvantaged children, at-risk youth, veterans, and Native Americans with free EAP.
Three modalities offered by Pegasus ECT provide an experiential therapeutic treatment approach. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Horse Therapy, and Equine Jobs are designed to manifest the ABC’s of life for individuals as well as groups. The ABC’s of mental health are Awareness, Behavior and Communication. Since non-verbal communication or body language is 97% of all communication, equine therapy is remarkably effective. These problems can be resolved through honest assertive communication, which is verbal and non-verbal. With EAP, individuals will have the chance to explore behaviors and patterns that have been problematic in their lives. For many people, this healthy normal process can be hindered on an unconscious level.
Human beings often generate counterproductive, mixed messages to others. They are usually not aware of their non-verbal cues. Since horses are honest, intuitive and nonjudgmental, and since horses make perfect therapists, Horse Therapy has successfully treated addictions and other behavioral problems through the non-verbal communication provided by the horse.
