It is part of life that we all have our emotional ups and downs. Upsetting events happen to everyone – events such as relationship breakdowns, loss of a job, a death in the family or serious illness. For the majority of people these events, however distressing, tend to pass by and we get on with our lives. Time as the saying goes is a great healer.
But if feelings of sadness continue for more than a few weeks and begin to affect daily life, then there may be something more serious going on other than simply feeling low.
Depression – What is it?
A whole range of symptoms can be present with depression, feelings of:
unhappy, feeling useless, unloved, self-harm, tired, fed up, even self harming
guilty, lack concentration, angry, even suicidal
Depression creates a sense of isolation which prevents the sufferer from seeking assitance from other people. This is how depression differs from general unhappiness. Symptoms of depression will vary in duration, combination and in their re occurance depnding on the individual.
The medical community are not sure if it is a brain chemical imbalance that causes depression or the depressed mood that results in the chemical disturbance found in the brain. It is highly likely that depression is caused by an interaction of psychological, physical and social effects that create a decending spiral of depression. Depression can be looked at as a natural mechanism within the brain to protect a person when external events are overpowering and that it is part of a natural self healing process.
In many cases the person will initially consult with their doctor and medication with drugs may be required as it suppresses overwhelming feelings. But the downside is that individuals tend to feel less alive and may therefore not get to the bottom of what is wrong or it takes longer for the person to return to a normal life balance, medication can in fact prolong the natural cycle.
How Counselling Helps With Depression
Counselling can assist with regaining a sense of control and normality to life. There is agreement with counsellors that depression starts when we think we are not good enough. As you see yourself as unacceptable and sad the more drastic the things you must do. Depression is one of the most drastic things a person can exhibit. Counsellors recognises this view of self as key. The sense of failure to satisfy high internal expectations results in depression.
Counselling sessions provide the opportunity to enable the person to talk about and pinpoint the life issues that lead to the depression. Counselling can assist in understanding which aspects of life problems they may be able to rectify or improve upon and to make sense of and find their own path out of depression.
A counsellor, unlike a relative or close friend is able to assist the person impartially in identifying areas of the persons life that are resulting in the depression and to direct them in the right direction to solving the problem areas.
