An active lifestyle is perhaps one of the best ways to keep depression at bay. However, if taken to extremes, a fitness program can actually cause depression.
But things don’t just stay in your mind, unfortunately, because depression will actually change the composition of your body.
So here is how to tell if exercise is making you depressed:
1. You lose interest in previously pleasurable activities: This is a tell tale sign of depression. If you lose interest in activities that used to be a source of pleasure, depression may be lurking. This happens because depression distorts your view of the world, turning the positive into the negative.
2. You gain or lose weight at extreme rates: Now too much exercise can cause this as well, so figuring out which is which can be hard. Nonetheless, serious depression can cause very rapid gains or losses in body mass. And negativity in most thought processes is also present.
3. Changes in sleeping patterns: Similar to appetite, you might sleep too much or too little. It’s more common, however, for depressed individuals to sleep less. Now it may be hard to separate overtraining from depression here, since both can alter sleep, but you need to be vigilant nonetheless.
4. A slowed down thinking process: Perhaps one of the most crippling aspects of depression is a decreased ability to think quickly. This happens over time because depression negatively affects the thinking centers in your brain.
5. Thoughts of death or suicide: Once someone reaches this stage, their depression is extremely serious. At this point, the thought processes and the mental outlook is so poor that death is seen as the only way to experience relief.
Although exercise is one of the best ways to decrease depression, it can also exacerbate it if done too heavily. So make sure you really watch your mind and body when taking exercise to new levels.
