Have you ever experienced the wearing, gnawing bite of anxiety? Most of us have. I remember the time I initially realized I had an anxiety problem clearly. I was at my place of employment and a deadline was coming up quite rapidly for a project I had been assigned, and my supervisor walked into my office and demand to know what the status was. Fear washed over me and hit me in the face like a bucket of ice cold water.
I was physically cold, and yet had a thin film of sweat suddenly appear all over my body beginning with my brow, top of my head, and palms. How could I respond? I had been procrastinating. The obvious truth is that my anxiousness was implicitly caused by a type of behavioral problem, yes, but also a neurochemical problem. I’d been consuming approximately five to six cups of gourmet coffee every day to keep going, and this was clearly quite excessive.
What I didn’t at the time realize is that all of the coffee consumption was entirely unnecessary. In fact, each cup that I consumed only increased my dependence to a greater degree, and by the next week was merely glossing over the fundamental symptoms of caffeine withdrawal that the coffee had itself manufactured. This frequent coffee sipping was inducing my moods and stress system to alternate violently from one end of the spectrum to the other all entirely dependent on my blood level of caffeine.
One of the principal routes that caffeine can manage to knock us off balance is by disturbing sleep. Caffeine has a particularly long half-life of approximately 4-6 hours and this means that a mere half of the caffeine in your body is removed six hours after ingestion. This consequently results in the fact that depending on the overall quantity you drank, and the approximate time of day you drank it, coffee can most assuredly interfere with your capacity to dive into those deeper levels of restorative sleep.
It means that when you rise the next morning after you are indeed going to feel quite tired, and probably somewhat cranky. The next step in the cycle is that you will once again reach for that morning vat of coffee, and most likely because you feel so lethargic you will consume just a smidgen more than you really need and therefore put yourself on the verge of a full blown anxiety attack… and all you need is the right trigger to set you off.
