You feel your heart palpitating, your palms sweating, your breaths shortening and internal tremors taking you over. This is a fear that has seemingly emerged from the darkest corners of your soul, but you aren’t even sure it came from there. You could have been driving your car, or awakened out of sleep, or at your desk performing your daily routine at your job. Perhaps it’s the first time it’s happened, perhaps not. If you already do, then you probably imagine the executor reading your will – but not exactly, as you know you’ll survive. If it’s the first time you are scared to death.
The panic attack’s origins and causes are ambiguous at best. Doctors and other medical experts are divided whether it comes from the genes or as a result of stress. Others believe that panic attacks are a result of mental disorders, including minor ones such as common phobias or mild depression. Know that you are not alone. It is estimated that one out of three adults will suffer a panic attack in their lifetime.
Some professionals have broken down panic attacks into three distinct types, spontaneous, specific and situational. Just as the name implies, a spontaneous panic attack happens when you least expect it. As for the other two types of panic attacks, those that are specific are generated by the repetition of certain situations, while those that are situational panic attacks happen whenever a person does a certain activity, such as putting a golf ball, even if such activity does not normally involve any fear or panic.
Some people suffer only one panic attack in their entire lifetime. These may be panic attacks which are brought on by major life stresses and ease after the stress is eliminated. Panic attacks happen repeatedly for others. The number of panic attacks you experience, or have experienced, would be the variable determining the type of professional help you may receive from a medical institution.
There are several institutions and professionals in the medical industry who use similar methods to those used by AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) when treating people who suffer from irregular panic attacks. Other doctors and physicians will treat those who suffer from extreme panic attacks with the help of special medication. Generally patients who suffer from repeated panic attacks will benefit by being referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist for counseling.
