Chairs that allow the occupant to rock back and forth through rockers or springs where the chair is mounted are called rocking chairs, or simply, rockers. Having been available since 1725, rockers have been created with various types and styles that served various purposes from relaxation to medical treatments.
But how do rockers rock? Occupants of rocking chairs are permitted to rock back and forth while sitting through two curved bands of wood that are attached to the bottom of the legs. One of these two bands is placed under the two left legs while the other is placed under the two right legs. As a result, back and forth are the only points where the chair contacts the floor when the occupant shifts his/her weight.
During the 18th Century, rocking chairs were only used as pieces of furniture placed in gardens. It was claimed that it was Benjamin Franklin who invented rockers. However, as there are no historical evidences to prove this claim, it is believed that the original creator of rocking chairs is still left unknown.
Today’s rocking chairs are distinguished by their diverse materials and cutting edge-and sometimes outrageous-designs. Various types of rockers include traditional rockers, spring rockers, glider rockers, swivel rockers, and reclining rockers. Traditional rockers resemble those garden rockers first found during the 18th Century that rocks back and forth on curved legs. These are less expensive than other types of rockers with their simple design yet their lack of flexibility is one major drawback. Spring rockers are similar to traditional rockers in the exception that spring rockers use a set of mounted springs to cause the chair to swing back and forth in an arc. Glider and swivel rockers are a type of rocking chairs that use a series of levers and swivels to move back and forth on a flat plane, rather than in an arc. Reclining rockers, on the other hand, are a type of glider and swivel rockers that include a reclining feature that allows the occupant to recline the chair to one or more relaxed positions.
Rockers also come in various styles. They can be designed with gooseneck styles, bentwood styles, Amish styles, Kennedy styles, Adirondack, or Morris. Chairs with unique wood carvings of geese necks and with arms that resemble a goose’s neck and head are designed with gooseneck style. Graceful handles and rocking legs that seem to flow into one anther seamlessly, on the other hand, are the distinguishing characteristics of rockers designed with Bentwood style. Amish styled chairs are designed with comfortable, contoured seats while Kennedy styled chairs have simple, steam-formed designs that include a back cushion. Adirondack chairs are those styled with rustic sticks and twigs that are either nailed or lashed together and Morris chairs are designed with low-lying upholstered seat and solid oak frame.
These various types and styles of rockers have become very popular and are often associated with mothers rocking their babies to sleep and grandparents enjoying their days on their porches. Yet a few are aware that rocking chairs were medically proven to alleviate various ailments including ADHD, Autism, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and Chronic Fatigue. As such, getting a rocking chair is not only a perfect way to add to your homes’ style but is also a great investment on our health.
